Vacation and Sleep

I often get the question “if I go on vacation will my baby’s sleep get all messed up?”. The answer is NO! You can absolutely vacation with your baby and still maintain good sleep. So, if you are thinking about booking a trip, go for it! You just need to know how to go about your day to day to ensure your child continues to sleep soundly!

On the day of travel

No matter what mode of transport you are using to get to your destination, car, train or plane, ensuring your child sleeps on the way there is very important. An overtired baby is no fun after all! If your child is on 2 or more naps per day I recommend trying to travel in the morning since the morning nap is the easiest nap to achieve. When travelling use whatever works best to get your baby to sleep. This may be a car seat, a baby carrier, or simply just holding your baby in your arms.

For a toddler or a preschooler on one nap if travelling by plane or train there is a good chance they will not sleep. In this case bring some quiet activities they can do to keep them occupied.

Changing time zones

When travelling to a destination in a different time zone it is always best to give you and your family time to adjust. One of the best ways to do so is once you arrive at your destination just relax. Don’t schedule any outings, sightseeing, or events the day of travel. Take the day of travel and the day after travel to adjust to the new time zone and rest. Everyone will be tired, especially your little one. Stay close to your accommodations and get familiar with your surroundings.

TIP: One of the best ways to adjust quickly to a new time zone is to get as much morning sun as possible.

Room arrangements and set up

When travelling away from home whether it is to your families for a weekend or across the world, replicating your child’s sleep environment as best possible is key. If your child uses a sound machine at home, bring it with you. If they sleep in a sleep sack at home, bring it with you. If they have a favorite stuffed animal that they usually sleep with, bring it with you. These objects and familiarities create comfort for your child. If your child still sleeps in a crib, inquire whether your accommodations supply a crib. If not bring a pack n play.

When it comes to deciding where to put your child this largely depends on your accommodations. If you are renting a house or a condo with multiple rooms and your child sleeps in their own room at home, it is best to give them their own room if possible. If staying in a hotel, one option is to book a suite and give your child their own room. Having a room for your child while on vacation is always ideal because you may not necessarily want to go to bed when your child goes to bed. This gives you the flexibility to not have to tip toe around a room and still enjoy your evening.

Vacation Schedule

The most important thing while on vacation is to enjoy yourself, however, maintaining your child’s sleep schedule as best possible is ideal to prevent an overtired child. If your baby is on 2 or more naps per day try to schedule outings in the morning and afternoon. This way they they can sleep on the go in the stroller. Try to have them in their bed whenever possible for the mid-day nap. If this is not possible every day, that is okay! What is most important is ensuring they do nap. If a nap gets missed, move bedtime earlier to ensure a restful night for everyone.

Remember, having children doesn’t mean you have to give up your yearly vacations. Knowing what to expect and being prepared is key. Go ahead, have fun and make new memories that you will cherish forever.
